2008 Kutztown Fair Speedway Press Releases
SMITH ADDS KUTZTOWN 600CC TRIUMPH TO WIN TOTAL; HORVATH, ACKER & MAURER POST VICTORIES
Thursday, July 09, 2009

KUTZTOWN, PA ~ Ryan Smith is leaving no stone unturned at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway.

Smith, a two-time winner in 270cc Micro-Sprint action this year, wheeled to his first wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint triumph of 2009 at the one-fifth-mile clay oval Wednesday before a large crowd on Schoenly Enterprises/SB3 Race Cars 'Pack the Track Night.'

The Kunkletown, Pa., second-generation driver started fifth in the 20-lap event. Arriving in second by lap 11, it took just one circuit for Smith to unseat leader pole starter Joey Kay, who set the pace from the outset.

A strong Jeff Hartman - up from 10th - arrived in second on lap 13. Running tight to the inside lane, the Flagtown, N.J., driver was poised to challenge for the win until dropping off the pace on a lap-17 restart.

Smith drove to the win over Pipersville, Pa.'s Brian Carber, who won the last event run at Kutztown on May 27. Carber started 12th. Billy Ney, Kay and Mike Freed completed the front five.

600cc heat winners were Arron Spahr, Kyle Reinhardt and Brian Carber. Brett Michalski wired the consolation.

The high line worked to perfection for Jay Horvath in the 270cc Micro-Sprint 20-lap event. Horvath, of Allentown, Pa., used outside momentum to repel the advances of Jay Hartman in a green-to-checkered victory, his first of the season at Kutztown. Horvath and Hartman ran side-by-side for much of the race.

Hartman was second, followed by Ryan Smith, who advanced from 12th starting spot. Defending 270cc champion Ross Perchak was fourth and ARDC Midget standout Nick Wean placed fifth.

Jay Hartman, Chad Owens and Smith triumphed in 270cc heat races. Smith won a three-lap Cash Dash for the heat victors and earned $100 courtesy of Russell E. Conrad Inc. Heating Oil.  Dave Grube and Tom Tanner split the 270cc consolations.

A combination of skill and luck set up Jan Acker's 20-lap Slingshot victory. Acker, whose Bob Hilbert Sportswear-sponsored No. 20* started from the pole, relinquished the lead to Brett Bieber on lap 12. However, Bieber's car promptly slowed in a cloud of smoke in turn one.

Acker, of Bechtelsville, Pa., regained the top spot and fought off Michael Glass for the victory. Shannon Smith, Kyle Lick and Nate Christman were third through fifth, respectively.

Acker and Jason West were Slingshot heat winners.

Jesse Maurer of Mount Joy, Pa., was dominant in the first '09 appearance by the 125cc Micro-Sprints. Maurer led the entire 20-lap distance. Ernie Miles III inherited the runner-up spot four laps from the finish when the second- through fourth-place cars tangled entering turn three and chased Maurer to the checkered.

Maurer and Dave Grube topped 125cc qualifying.

Racing resumes next Wednesday, July 15, with wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints, Slingshots and Junior Slingshots in action. For the kids, there will be bike races and a bike raffle. To register for the bike races in advance, e-mail Janelle Stump at:
