KUTZTOWN, PA ~ Arron Spahr beat the rain - and the 600cc wingless Micro-Sprint field - to win the weather-postponed feature event from July 22 Wednesday night at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway. The program, run as part of the 138th Annual Kutztown Fair, started approximately two-and-a-half hours late after an hour of steady rainfall moved over the one-fifth-mile clay oval as hot laps were called to the track for the Century 21 Park Road/Team Kobylarz/Chuck's Auto Salvage-sponsored program. Shane Braxton (125cc Micro-Sprint) and Steve Sacks (Young Gun 390) also triumphed before a second band of storms curtailed the activity at 11:45 p.m. The regularly-scheduled wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint and 270cc Micro-Sprint features were paid in full per the starting line-up with no make-up date available. Teams were given the option to make up the main events tonight (Aug. 13) but declined per a vote. All drivers qualifying for the two features received 100 participation points while competitors failing to qualify were given 50 points. Heat-race points accumulated during the night were also applied. In the heldover 20-lap wingless 600cc Micro event from July 22, York, Pa.'s Spahr rolled off the grid seventh spot. Spahr pressured race-long leader Jeff Hartman over the race's second half working the low lane on a tacky track surface. Spahr drove hard to the inside of Hartman entering turn three on lap 16, executed a slide job and paced the final three laps for his second Kutztown triumph of 2009. Hartman settled for second, ahead of a hard-charging Ryan Smith, who started 11th. By virtue of the rain later in the night, a fourth-place finish was good enough for 15th-starter Brian Carber of Pipersville, Pa., to clinch the 600cc championship. His ultimate margin over runner-up Smith was six points. Jason Van Doren completed the front five. In the 20-lap 125cc Micro event, Shane Braxton led from start to finish in convincing fashion. The grandson of auto racing legend Bobby Braxton negotiated lapped traffic flawlessly for the win. Dave Grube took over second on the final lap from Daniel Cogdill. Dana Watkins and Mark Yoder filled out the front five. Steve Sacks never relinquished the top spot en route to the Young Gun 390 15-lap triumph. Before the rain, heat winners were Brett Michalski, Alex Bright and Shelby Harper (600cc) and Dave Grube, Matt McAnally and Jay Horvath (270cc). The 270cc consolation winners were Eric Bodine and Ross Perchak. Hazleton, Pa.'s Perchak was declared the 270cc Micro-Sprint champion by virtue of the rain. Car counts were strong at 31 600cc Micros, 41 270cc Micros, 11 125cc Micros and five Young Gun 390s. Receiving Hard Charger recognition were Carber (600cc) and Dave Grube (125cc). Racing resumes tonight (Aug. 13) for the third event of the annual Kutztown Fair Races with touring series races for the Slingshots and Junior Slingshots, plus Senior Champ Kart Flathead and Senior Flat Kart Flathead events. Haldeman Ford Lincoln Mercury of Kutztown sponsor the evening's activities. The Atlantic Coast Old Timers (ACOT) will be on hand. For the Fair Races, the $25 pit pass will include entrance to the fair. The $8 fair admission will include the race ticket price. Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. for all events. Car entry remains $20. Transponders are mandatory for all divisions in 2009. Rentals will be available at the track for $10 per night with proper photo identification.
